BIGSAS Alumni Conference 2018

Since BIGSAS was founded in 2007, 199 doctoral students from all over the world have successfully completed their doctoral studies in the field of African studies (01/2025). After a successful PhD disputation, they transition from being a Junior Fellows to an alumnus. As BIGSAS aims to bring together outstanding African and non-African academics for an active interdisciplinary and intercultural exchange, the institution attaches great importance to the close involvement of its Alumni after they have left the graduate school. Their diverse expertise and different professional experiences are of great value to the 78 current Junior Fellows, despite the physical distance between them. As part of a multidisciplinary mentoring approach, the alumni act, for example, as associate members of BIGSAS and mentors of the Junior Fellows. They also take part in regular (digital) exchanges in working groups, small and large workshops, seminars or colloquia or support the institution in the organization and implementation of major events, such as the BIGSAS Journalist Award, which has been presented regularly since 2011. Recurring national and international alumni conferences round off the integration and continuous interaction.

The careers of our Alumni are as diverse as their personal backgrounds and research interests. Many continue to devote themselves to university research as post-docs, academic teaching staff, assistant professors, and professors and have become integral members of their respective academic institutions. Others pursue their passion for scientific research

in think tanks, private research centers, NGOs and international research organizations, or as executives and managers in the private sector. And while some Alumni have remained in Bayreuth, others have chosen to pursue careers in their (African) home countries. Despite the geographical distance - our Alumni have always maintained their close connection to their alma mater and support BIGSAS in many ways. The know-how and professional experience of our Alumni are of great value to our current Junior Fellows. And in addition to lively exchanges with our current doctoral students and amongst each other - digitally and at regular meetings - they also assist in the organization of events, such as the BIGSAS Journalist Award, which has been awarded regularly since 2011.

BIGSAS has currently 200 alumni (112 male, 87 female, 1 diverse) from more than 30 countries (01/2025)
