Combating diseases in Frontier Zones: Measles Outbreaks and Vaccination Campaigns in Manicaland Province, Zimbabwe 1900-2010
This project is a history of mass vaccination campaigns against measles in Zimbabwe since 1900. It is a long duree historical study that explores how local communities in south eastern Zimbabwe experienced and perceived various state and non-state sponsored measles vaccination campaigns. This project conceptualises vaccination as a meeting point- a space of interactions between various state and non-state players. As such, experiences of vaccination are simultaneously experiences of the individual body, embedded in broader socio-economic and political relations across diverse communities and times. The research contributes to the growing scholarship on Africans’ experiences of mass vaccination
campaigns and other medical interventions. The project deploys qualitative methods. Oral interviews will be conducted in Zimbabwe with caregivers, health workers and politicians.
